When traveling around the world or within the United States, you know there are certain items you shouldn’t pack in your carry-on bags, such as sharp objects and large amounts of liquids. But did you know there are certain things you should avoid packing in your checked luggage? Grab your packing list and stick with us as we cover ten travel items you should never pack in your checked luggage.

1. Cash and Credit Cards

When your checked luggage passes through security, there’s no way of really knowing who is looking at your luggage. As most luggage is screened, some suitcases are chosen to be inspected by hand, even though it’s rare. During a hand inspection, it’s always possible for someone to take items from your luggage, and some of the easiest to take are cash and credit cards.

2. All of Your Clothes

This one is a no-brainer, but you shouldn’t pack ALL of your clothing in your checked luggage bag when traveling in the off chance the airline loses your luggage, and trust us, it does happen. When taking a carry on bag, pack an extra outfit or two just in case it takes longer to find your luggage when you reach your destination. Keep in mind that some credit card companies provide coverage if your luggage becomes lost and will reimburse you for items like toiletries and clothing.

3. Anything Illegal

Hopefully this is common sense, but we still need to mention it on our list, so make sure you’re taking a long look at the list of prohibited items and don’t pack them in your carry-on or checked luggage. Staying clear of prohibited items will make your travel process much smoother and ensure you get through security without any issues. If you’re unsure of whether or not you can bring an item, you can always contact the TSA for confirmation.

4. Phone Chargers

It’s quite possible that you’re carrying electronics in your carry-on bag, but what about the chargers that keep them going, such as phone and laptop chargers? Getting a replacement charger isn’t cheap, especially if you need to buy one at the airport, like a phone charger. Most electronic charging devices are small enough to keep in your carry-on bag, so do yourself a favor and keep them there.

5. Medicine

As avid travelers are aware, not everything stays according to schedule and sometimes bumps in travel plans occur or luggage may never arrive. In some situations, some carry on bags can be checked last minute. When carrying medications, you should always prepare for the worst case scenario and pack medications in your personal item so that you won’t need to worry about losing it.

6. Lithium Batteries

Recently, there’s been an increase in circumstances where lithium batteries have exploded mid-flight, so this probably isn’t a surprise as to why you shouldn’t pack these in your checked luggage.  However, you are still allowed to bring lithium-ion batteries in your carry-on bags. In addition, if your checked luggage comes with a built-in charging feature, you must remove the port before checking your bag.

7. Electronics

You might think packing your electronics in your checked luggage might take other weight off when bringing your carry-on, but you’d be surprised how often laptops become damaged in suitcases. When in transit, suitcases are constantly being thrown around, and not only does your laptop run the risk of becoming damaged, but there’s also the risk of theft. If this happens, don’t expect the airline to pay, as many airlines state that they aren’t responsible for stolen or broken electronic items.

8. Passports and Important Documentation

In our technology-driven world, boarding passes, and other types of essential documentation can be stored on our cell phones, along with passport apps in some cases. If you’re an avid traveler, then you know it’s pure common sense to keep these items on you at all times. When checking your luggage, be mindful of keeping original documents in your luggage that contain sensitive information, such as your social security number and banking information.

9. Valuables

As you’re probably already aware if you’re a frequent flyer, airlines clearly make it known that they aren’t liable for jewelry and other kinds of valuable items. If for some reason you find yourself needing to take valuables with you on a flight, pack them in your personal items. If you’re someone who takes a lot of cash when traveling, keep it in your carry on bag, something small enough that you can keep on you at all times.

10. Specific Types of Food and Alcohol

If you’re traveling overseas or even to the state of Hawaii, there are specific types of foods you shouldn’t bring in your checked luggage. Food such as pineapple, corn, coffee, and coconuts are restricted because of their potential to harm Hawaiian agriculture. If you’re bringing any food back from overseas, there are certain restrictions on meats and cheeses, so make sure you check with the United States Department of Agriculture before traveling.
