Snowscapes and Sunshine: 10 U.S. Cities That Are Some of the Coldest in America

After experiencing 20 below zero-degree weather, I can tell you that it sucks the wind right out of you, regardless of layers, mittens, hats, and scarves. And that’s not even as cold as it gets! Here are some of the coldest cities in America. Brrrr, have you been?

1. Duluth, Minnesota

Located in the Midwest United States Duluth experiences extreme cold temperatures from being so close to Lake Superior and often is referred to as the snowbelt. Duluth receives a lot of lake-effect snow due to the cold air coming across the warm water of the Great Lakes. Duluth’s close distance to Lake Superior makes it one of the snowiest citiesin the United States and has a minimum average temperature of 1.5 degrees.

2. Marquette, Michigan

While it’s not as cold as some of the other cities on our list, Marquette can receive cold weather in the winter and is the coldest city in Michigan. Situated in the northern peninsula of Michigan, and with its close distance to the Great Lakes, Marquette can get cold temperatures and snow from October all the way up to May. The minimum average temperature in Marquette is 5.2 degrees and the city can receive heavy snow all the way through spring.

3. Fargo, North Dakota

If you ever travel to Fargo, North Dakota, you’ll probably find that it’s blanketed in snow and is located in the northern area of the state; therefore, it’s vulnerable to the cold and wind that always ravages these states during the winter. Even with its extreme cold temperatures in the winter, it does get to see all four of its seasons and is gorgeous to visit during the summer and fall. The minimum average temperature in Fargo reaches 0.1 degrees and the city doesn’t begin to see its extremely cold temperatures until December.

4. Williston, North Dakota

Williston, North Dakota is one of the coldest cities in the United States, with its average temperatures hovering around 0 degrees. Williston receives its coldest temperatures during the month of January, where temperatures stay between five and 20 degrees. The lowest recorded temperature in Williston was negative 50 degrees.

5. Fairbanks, Alaska

The minimum average temperature in Fairbanks, Alaska gets down to negative 17 degrees and is one of the coldest cities in the United States. Located in northern Alaska, it previously reached a record of negative 66 degrees, which is hard to even believe is possible! Unlike other cities in Alaska, Fairbanks sits below sea level and gets little sunlight, hence its cold temperatures.

6. St. Cloud, Minnesota

St. Cloud is one of the coldest cities in the United States and also receives a lot of lake-effect snow during the winter, which leads to blankets of snow and freezing temperatures. Unlike the city of Duluth, St. Cloud receives a lot of humidity during the summer since it’s able to receive warm arm that travels up from the Gulf of Mexico. The minimum average temperature in St. Cloud is 1.8 degrees, with spring and summer the best times for visiting.

7. Huron, South Dakota

Situated in eastern South Dakota, Huron has warm summers and cold, snowy winters receiving a whopping 37 inches of snowfall each year, which is nine inches more than the average. Huron can receive as late as April and as early as October and can be a somewhat humid city in the summer. The minimum average temperature is 6.6 degrees during the winter.

8. Rochester, Minnesota

Rochester is located in southern Minnesota, closer to Wisconsin, with its residents being all too familiar with its cold and snowy winters. The main reason for Rochester’s cold temperatures is the wind, with the average wind speeds reaching anywhere from 10 to 12 MPH. The lowest recorded temperature in Rochester was negative 40 degrees, with its average minimum temperature hovering around eight degrees.

9. Concord, New Hampshire

Located in the eastern part of the country, Concord is one of the coldest cities in the United States and receives blankets of snow, with the average snowfall being around 61 inches. Snowfall in Concord can fall over until late spring. The lowest recorded temperature in Concord was negative 37 degrees, with the minimum average temperature being 15 degrees.

10. Aberdeen, South Dakota

Situated in northern South Dakota, Aberdeen experiences the same type of cold as North Dakota over its landscapes of mountains and water. Since South Dakota is located near the middle of the United States, it receives warm air from the Gulf of Mexico and colder air from Canada. With this combination, northern cities receive cold air with Aberdeen reaching a minimum average temperature of 1.5 degrees.
